What is a chiropractor?

A chiropractor is a musculoskeletal specialist. Chiropractors are trained to do noninvasive leading edge treatment for back pain, neck pain, headaches, car accidents, shoulder pain, knee pain, ankle pain, etc. The majority of chiropractic graduate training is in the taking of a patients history, orthopedic testing, neurology testing, functional testing, X-ray interpretation. The chiropractor will do a thorough examination to determine and diagnose the source of the problem. The doctor will then set up an appointment to review all of the findings and go over a treatment plan. This treatment plan is individualized and tailored to each specific case depending on the examination and X-Ray findings.

How Much Schooling Does A Chiropractor Have?

Each program is different in the exact amount of time it takes to become a chiropractor. At minimum for accelerated programs, it takes 3+ years to get the doctorate on top of the 3+ years of undergraduate courses. The courses are heavy on anatomy, physiology, diagnosing pathology, X rays, philosophy, and of course treatment. Then there are National Board Examinations that everyone must pass before they can receive a license to practice.

What is chiropractic care?

Chiropractors are trained on a variety of techniques to correct spinal and muscle problems. We are trained on many manual techniques as well as the use of a spring loaded instrument for more gentle treatment. Our clinic is trained on postural restoration and we use machines to stretch the spine into its proper alignment.

Are chiropractors useful?

In a word YES! Don't take our word for it, read our many reviews. We also follow the most current research. One such article stated that patient satisfaction for back pain was greater with the chiropractor than physical therapy or primary care. Another article shows that when chiropractic is combined with rehabilitation exercises there is a 20% chance of pain resolution. This is why we do both rehab and chiropractic in our office!

How Safe Is Chiropractic?

Chiropractic is extremely safe. Research has found that significant adverse effects are less often than 1 in 100 million adjustments. The most common side effect of an adjustment is muscle soreness or achiness.

How many chiropractic sessions do you need?

This completely depends on the examination and X-Rays. The vast majority of our patients choose to receive 20-40 treatments because they want a correction to their spine. This option of care will allow them to not only reduce or eliminate their pain but also to strengthen their spine to help prevent further injury. We take follow up X-Rays every 20-40 visits to confirm the changes being made!

How much does chiropractic care cost?

The cost depends on multiple factors. First is what kind of care you need. Some people only need adjustments, others need adjustments, rehab, and traction. Second is what insurance you have and how much is covered. It is nearly impossible to provide an accurate quote for your services until you have an exam and the doctor determines what you need.

Does Insurance Cover Chiropractic Visits?

Most insurance plans have benefits for chiropractic, rehab, and massage therapy. We are in-network with most major insurance companies. Every plan is different so we can check on your benefits and let you know what your coverage is.

How Does Chiropractic Care Help?

Chiropractic care helps by treating the cause of aches and pains. Adjustments mobilize areas that are stuck, and rehab exercises focus on tight or underactive groups to get the problem areas working correctly.

How do chiropractors relieve pain from injuries or accidents?

We have done over 100 hours of post-graduate studies on the care of those that have had a work injury and car accidents. Chiropractic care is especially helpful because injuries almost always affect the joints of the spine and the surrounding muscles, tendons, and ligaments. The body's common reaction to trauma is to swell and immobilize the injured area. This is a problem because this swelling will inflame the muscles and joints creating pain. This immobilization will allow the body to form scar tissue and long term restriction and pain. By getting regular chiropractic treatment for your injury, you will heal faster and have better long term results.

I Didn't Hear A Sound. Does That Mean The Adjustment Didn't Work?

Not every adjustment needs to make the “pop” or “crack” sound. Movements to the joints created by adjustments may be subtle based on the technique that is used, or joints may be very stiff and need several sessions to fully clear. Either way, the treatment to the areas is effective, some in a more loud and dramatic way than others.

Can I Become Addicted To Chiropractic Adjustments?

You may get a sense of rush or relief when you feel and hear the adjustment happen. However, there is no such thing as “adjustment addiction.” The phenomenon of people wanting to get adjusted regularly comes from listening to your body and keeping up with the maintenance it deserves-much like checking your oil or tire pressure on your car. Generally, when you know how it feels for your body to be moving well, you will know when you need another adjustment.

Are There Chiropractic Side Effects?

Reactions to spinal manipulation are more common at the beginning of care and lessen as you make progress. Treatment is creating movement in areas that may have been "stuck" for some time or using muscles in ways that they are not used to. The side effects tend to arise and disappear shortly after treatment and are usually gone the next day. The most common reactions are local soreness or discomfort but can include headaches or fatigue.

Is Chiropractic Care Safe While I'm Pregnant?

Chiropractic is safe and effective for women who are pregnant or trying to conceive. There are many anecdotal stories of couples having troubles conceiving, then finally get pregnant after treatments. The nerves in the mid to low back are instrumental for well-functioning reproductive systems. In addition, the muscles of the low back, hips, and pelvis can be worked on to reduce stress on the systems. Several moms-to-be experience great benefits from getting adjusted and report faster and less painful labors compared to previous pregnancies if they had given birth before.

Is Chiropractic Safe For Children?

Chiropractic is safe for anyone with a spine from birth on. Each adjustment is specific to the patent’s size and age and can be extremely gentle. Babies go through intense stress during the process of coming into the world and can benefit from care immediately. Colic, reflux, irregular bowel movements, lack of head-turning/mobility, and many more things can be helped to make the baby and the parents much happier and more comfortable. As children grow and start running around it may seem they fall or get minor injuries endlessly. Not to mention, some start junior sports as soon as they can, leading to more bumps and bruises. Puberty, competitive athletics, and constantly being hunched over in front of books and computers for class all put stress on the body. Receiving care regularly based on the individual needs of the child is particularly important to manage all of these events children experience as they grow up.

Can I See A Chiropractor If I've Had Back Surgery?

Yes! Spinal surgery is life-changing and we want to be able to provide the care that is needed to prevent or delay another surgery. Depending on the intensity of the procedure, we may or may not be able to provide care directly to the affected region. Regardless, we often can care for the rest of the spine to keep you feeling the best you can.

How Long Will It Take To Work?

Providers and patients love when there is one “magical” adjustment that fixes all the problems completely. That may be the case for some patients but is not the norm. Partial relief or improvement can be felt immediately, and it will most likely take several treatments to resolve. We see problems after they have been lingering for weeks to years so there are many layers of complexity to address before these issues are corrected.
